What is a Certified Translation?

Certified translations have specific requirements in order to be recognized by authorities, courts of law, employers, schools and universities. The accuracy and completeness of a certified translation must be attested by a sworn translator, who is appointed by a Regional Court (Landgericht) in Germany. A certified translation is only complete with the translator’s official stamp and signature.

    Common Documents

    Identification documents

Do not hesitate to contact me for a certified translation of your Identification Card, Passport, Driver’s License, or other identification documents.

    Legal documents

This includes applications or court judgments. Your confidential data is private and will not be passed on to third parties. Everything will be processed in accordance with data protection regulations.

    Certificates of Conduct

Certificates of conduct contain information on any prior convictions of the applicant and can usually be requested online. There are several different types of certificates of conduct. In countries outside of the EU there are many aspects to be aware of. A German certificate of conduct can be applied for at your local registration office or at the German Federal Office of Justice. The available printed languages are German, English and French.

    Educational Qualifications

Employers, schools and universities will often need a certified translation of your existing certificates if you have a foreign application. If needed, you may request a custom offer for a certified translation of your diploma, undergraduate or postgraduate degree, high school diploma or any other vital documents.

    Birth certificates

Required for the issue of identification documents, marriage, or naturalization procedures. They contain information on name, sex, day and place of birth, as well as first and last names of the parents. The competent authority for issuing these documents is the registry office in your place of birth.

    Divorce Papers

If you were married or divorced in a foreign country, a certified translation of your divorce papers is required in order to get remarried. They contain information about your former spouse(s), the reasons for divorce, circumstances of the hearings and a summary of any decisions.

    Marriage Certificates

These serve as legal proof of your marriage. If you were married in a foreign country, a certified translation of your marriage certificate is normally required as a part of the naturalization procedure. These are also normally required to notify your employer, insurance company or tax office of any name changes that may have occurred.

    Non-Marriage Certificates

If you would like to get married in Germany, or enter into a civil union/partnership, you need to supply an official document of your current marital status. You can obtain a non-marriage certificate from the registry office of your current place of residence.

    Apostilles

In some cases, another form of certification, called an “Apostille”, is required in addition to your other documents. This certifies the authenticity of your paperwork so that it is recognized abroad. Whether you will need an apostille or not depends on several factors. Mainly, it is required if there is no standardized procedure of authentication between the issuing country and the country that the document is being presented to. The need for an apostille will be communicated to you by the respective institution. If your document is provided with an apostille, both will need to be translated.

Is there a difference between beeidigter / ermächtigter / vereidigter / amtlicher Übersetzer?

These terms are synonymous. They vary between federal states in Germany. As a certified translator in the state of Bavaria, my official title is: “öffentlich bestellter und allgemein beeidigter Übersetzer für die spanische Sprache”.

Is your certified translation really accepted by all institutions?

As a sworn translator for the Spanish and German languages, all of my translations meet the legal requirements of any German or international authority or institution. Once a translation is completed, the accuracy and authenticity of the certified translation is confirmed with the signature and stamp of the sworn translator. The translation will then be attached to the original documents and stamped again.
